Welcome to the pest season

As we start to get more humid and temps rise in Houston this can only mean one thing, bug season!

The sub- tropical weather is not just perfect for our natural bugs but insects from all tropical regions of the world.  From ants that invade our homes to termites that come in on barges. We are invaded on a daily basis and don't even know it until it's too late. Roaches are probably the biggest fear of homeowners as they appear out of thin air and without warning it seems. Once in the home roaches will seek out moist humid areas in the home like bathrooms and kitchen.  The female roach can and will deposit egg sacks in the moist, humid areas and the cycle of roach infestation will begin.  Ants invade homes seeking food and shelter and it seems we have plenty of it for them. Once ants come and find food they will set off pheromones that will bring more ant workers to round up the food and bring it back to the colony. The queen will feed secondary reproducers and eggs while the workers continue with the food foraging and accumulation.

Termites, like ants, are always foraging for food. Unlike most ants termites are wood destroyers. Houston has three main termites that invade homes.

Eastern Subterranean termite is our natural termite and is most common.

Formosa Termite is a Subterranean termite native to the island of Formosa (Taiwan) and is very destructive. Given the nickname of "super termite" for the destructive nature and how large the colony gets.

Drywood Termite is the least invasive of the termites but is well known in parts of Houston.
